SMART18 sponsors apprenticeship programs that combine on-the-job training with classroom instruction to prepare members for successful careers in the sheet metal and HVAC trades. Apprentices gain hands-on experience while completing technical education through our Local JATC’s, the SMART International Training Institute and partnering technical colleges.

Fire Life Safety

Since 1888, SMART has helped create safer buildings.

During a fire, HVAC ductwork can quickly spread smoke and harmful toxins throughout a building. Fire and smoke dampers are critical safety components that prevent this spread, protecting occupants and preserving building safety systems. Because these dampers can fail without warning, trained FLS professionals perform hands-on inspections to identify issues, make repairs and ensure these systems work properly when they are needed most.

SMART18 Retirees' Club

Our Retirees’ Clubs ensure members stay connected long after their careers end. Organized by location, these groups provide opportunities for retirees to gather, share stories, enjoy social outings and maintain the friendships built throughout their time in the union. They also offer a way to stay informed, with union representatives often attending meetings to share updates and keep retirees connected to SMART18.
